Top 10 most inspiring quotes by David Foster Wallace

  • Everybody is identical in their secret unspoken belief that way deep down they are different from everyone else.
  • You will become way less concerned with what other people think of you when you realize how seldom they do.
  • We’re all lonely for something we don’t know we’re lonely for. How else to explain the curious feeling that goes around feeling like missing somebody we’ve never even met?
  • It’s weird to feel like you miss someone you’re not even sure you know.
  • The parts of me that used to think I was different or smarter or whatever, almost made me die.
  • It did what all ads are supposed to do: create an anxiety relievable by purchase.
  • Lonely people tend, rather, to be lonely because they decline to bear the psychic costs of being around other humans. They are allergic to people. People affect them too strongly.
  • There’s good self-consciousness, and then there’s toxic, paralyzing, raped-by-psychic-Bedouins self-consciousness.
  • What goes on inside is just too fast and huge and all interconnected for words to do more than barely sketch the outlines of at most one tiny little part of it at any given instant.
  • I’d like to be the sort of person who can enjoy things at the time, instead of having to go back in my head and enjoy them.

David Foster Wallace (1962-2008) was an influential American writer known for his distinctive style and insightful exploration of contemporary life. Born in Ithaca, New York, he grew up in Illinois and attended Amherst College, where he majored in philosophy. Wallace later pursued graduate studies in creative writing at the University of Arizona.

Wallace’s writing career gained momentum with the publication of his debut novel, “The Broom of the System” (1987), but he achieved widespread recognition and critical acclaim with his magnum opus, “Infinite Jest” (1996). This sprawling and innovative work is often considered one of the greatest novels of the late 20th century.

Throughout his career, Wallace’s writing combined elements of postmodernism with a keen sense of humor and a deep exploration of the human condition. He frequently delved into themes of addiction, entertainment, and the search for meaning in a hyperconnected world.

Tragically, Wallace struggled with depression, and on September 12, 2008, he took his own life. His untimely death was a profound loss to the literary world. Despite his relatively short life, David Foster Wallace’s works continue to resonate with readers and remain influential in contemporary literature.
