Dick York (1928-1992) was an American actor best known for his role as Darrin Stephens in the popular TV series “Bewitched.” He was born on September 4, 1928, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and began his acting career on Broadway in the early 1950s.
York’s breakthrough came when he was cast as the original Darrin Stephens in “Bewitched” in 1964. His portrayal of the mortal husband married to a witch, Samantha Stephens, played by Elizabeth Montgomery, earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan following. He remained with the show until 1969 when health issues forced him to leave.
Throughout his career, York appeared in numerous films and television shows, including “Inherit the Wind” (1960) and “Sergeant York” (1941). However, “Bewitched” remained his most iconic role.
Tragically, York’s health deteriorated after leaving the show due to a back injury sustained during filming. He struggled with painkiller addiction and encountered financial difficulties. Dick York passed away on February 20, 1992, in East Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 63.
Despite his relatively short time in the spotlight, Dick York’s portrayal of Darrin Stephens continues to be remembered fondly by fans of “Bewitched” and remains an enduring part of television history.
