Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, served from 1945 to 1953. Born on May 8, 1884, in Lamar, Missouri, Truman grew up in Independence, Missouri.

Before entering politics, he worked as a farmer, a bank clerk, and a haberdasher. Truman’s political career began in the military during World War I, where he served as an artillery officer. After the war, he entered local politics in Missouri, eventually becoming a U.S. Senator.

Truman gained national prominence when he was chosen as Franklin D. Roosevelt’s running mate in the 1944 presidential election. Upon Roosevelt’s death in 1945, Truman assumed the presidency during the final months of World War II. He made the controversial decision to use atomic bombs on Japan, ending the war. Truman also oversaw the post-war reconstruction efforts and the establishment of key institutions like the United Nations and NATO. He passed away on December 26, 1972.
