James F. Byrnes (1882–1972) was an American politician and statesman who played significant roles in various branches of the U.S. government. Born in South Carolina, Byrnes served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1911 to 1925 and in the U.S. Senate from 1931 to 1941. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Roosevelt in 1941 but resigned a year later to become Director of the Office of Economic Stabilization during World War II.

Byrnes then served as a close advisor to President Roosevelt and later President Truman, participating in key wartime conferences and diplomatic missions.

In 1945, he became Secretary of State under Truman and played a pivotal role in shaping post-war foreign policy, including involvement in the formation of the United Nations. He later served as Governor of South Carolina from 1951 to 1955. Byrnes was known for his pragmatism and skillful negotiation, particularly in matters of international diplomacy.
