Jaya Bachchan (née Bhaduri; born April 9, 1948, in Jabalpur, India) is an acclaimed Indian actress and politician. She began her acting career at 15 with Satyajit Ray’s Bengali film “Mahanagar” (1963) and gained prominence with “Guddi” (1971).
Throughout the 1970s, she delivered notable performances in films like “Abhimaan” (1973), “Chupke Chupke” (1975), and “Sholay” (1975). After marrying actor Amitabh Bachchan in 1973, she took a hiatus from acting to focus on family.
She returned with “Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa” (1998) and earned acclaim for roles in “Fiza” (2000) and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…” (2001). Bachchan has received several Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri in 1992. Since 2004, she has been a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing the Samajwadi Party.
