Lawrence Durrell (1912–1990) was a British expatriate novelist, poet, dramatist, and travel writer, best known for his tetralogy “The Alexandria Quartet.” Born in India to British colonial parents, Durrell spent much of his early life traveling and living in various parts of the world, including England, Greece, and Egypt, which deeply influenced his writing.

“The Alexandria Quartet,” consisting of “Justine” (1957), “Balthazar” (1958), “Mountolive” (1958), and “Clea” (1960), is Durrell’s most celebrated work. Set in Alexandria, Egypt, the novels explore themes of love, desire, identity, and perception through the perspectives of different characters, with each book offering new insights into the events of the others.

Durrell’s writing style is characterized by lush prose, intricate narratives, and a penchant for philosophical reflection. Beyond fiction, he also wrote poetry, essays, and travel literature, showcasing his versatile literary talents.
