Pol Pot, born Saloth Sâr on May 19, 1925, in Prek Sbauv, Cambodia, was a revolutionary leader and the Prime Minister of Democratic Kampuchea from 1976 to 1979. As the head of the Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot sought to transform Cambodia into a rural, classless society through radical agrarian socialism.

His regime is infamous for its brutality, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1.7 to 2 million people due to starvation, forced labor, torture, and execution in what became known as the Cambodian Genocide. Pol Pot’s government targeted intellectuals, city residents, ethnic minorities, and perceived political opponents.

After the Vietnamese invasion in 1979, which ended his rule, Pol Pot retreated to the jungle, leading a guerrilla resistance until his arrest by his own faction in 1997. He died under house arrest on April 15, 1998, never having faced international justice for his crimes.
