Stephen J. Harper is a Canadian politician who served as the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada from 2006 to 2015. Born on April 30, 1959, in Toronto, Ontario, Harper grew up in a middle-class family.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree in economics from the University of Calgary. Harper was first elected to the House of Commons in 1993 as a member of the Reform Party, later becoming the leader of the Canadian Alliance party in 2002. In 2003, he merged the Alliance with the Progressive Conservative Party to form the Conservative Party of Canada.

As Prime Minister, Harper’s tenure was marked by conservative economic policies, including tax cuts and deregulation. He also led Canada through the global financial crisis of 2008. After his defeat in the 2015 federal election, Harper retired from politics and has since been involved in public speaking and writing.
