Merle Haggard (1937-2016) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist who is widely regarded as one of the greatest country music artists of all time. He was born in Bakersfield, California, and raised in a converted boxcar. As a young man, he got into trouble with the law and spent several years in prison. After his release from prison in the early 1960s, Haggard began to perform at local bars and clubs. He was soon discovered by record producer Ken Nelson, who signed him to Capitol Records. Haggard’s first big hit was the song “Sing a Sad Song,” which was released in 1964. Over the next few years, he had a string of successful singles, including “The Fugitive,” “Okie from Muskogee,” and “Mama Tried.”
Haggard’s music was characterized by its traditional country sound and its honest, often gritty lyrics. He was known for his distinctive voice, which had a rough, gravelly quality to it. In addition to his work as a performer, Haggard was also a prolific songwriter, and he wrote many of his own hits as well as songs for other artists.
