Paulette Goddard (1910-1990) was an American actress renowned for her work in the 1930s and 1940s. Born Marion Levy in Queens, New York, she began her career as a child fashion model and Ziegfeld Girl. Goddard’s big break came when she signed with Paramount Pictures in the early 1930s. She gained prominence with her role in the musical comedy “The Kid from Spain” (1932).
Goddard’s most notable collaboration was with Charlie Chaplin, both professionally and personally. She starred alongside him in “Modern Times” (1936) and “The Great Dictator” (1940), two of Chaplin’s most acclaimed films. Their on-screen chemistry was electric, and they were rumored to be secretly married, though this was never confirmed.
In the 1940s, Goddard received critical acclaim for her performances in films such as “The Women” (1939) and “Reap the Wild Wind” (1942). She earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in “So Proudly We Hail!” (1943).
After her Hollywood career waned, Goddard relocated to Europe and became a prominent art collector. She married novelist Erich Maria Remarque in 1958, with whom she lived until his death in 1970. Paulette Goddard passed away in 1990 in Switzerland, leaving behind a legacy of classic film performances and an indelible mark on Hollywood’s Golden Age.

- You live in the present and you eliminate things that don’t matter. You don’t carry the burden of the past. I’m not impressed by the past very much. The past bores me, to tell you the truth; it really bores me. I don’t remember many movies and certainly not my own.
- Actors and actresses who say they never go to see their own pictures are talking through their hats. You don’t have to be a Freud to know that the most fascinating person in the world – actors or anybody – is yourself.
- I am not temperamental. I just know what I want and if I don’t have it, I try to get it.
- He who accepts the unaltered philosophy of another is as ludicrous as he who donshis neighbor’s hat, and infinitely more ridiculous.
