Ram Nath Kovind, born on October 1, 1945, in Paraukh village, Uttar Pradesh, India, is a prominent Indian politician who served as the 14th President of India from July 25, 2017, to July 25, 2022. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has had a distinguished career in public service.
Kovind began his political journey as a lawyer, practicing in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He also served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the Indian Parliament) from 1994 to 2006. During his tenure as an MP, he focused on issues related to the welfare of marginalized communities, particularly the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
In 2015, Kovind was appointed as the Governor of the Indian state of Bihar, where he continued to work towards the upliftment of disadvantaged sections of society.
His ascension to the presidency in 2017 marked a historic moment as he became the first individual from a Dalit background (a historically marginalized community in India) to hold the highest constitutional office in the country.
