Saddam Hussein (1937–2006) was an Iraqi political leader who served as the fifth president of Iraq from 1979 until 2003. Born on April 28, 1937, in Al-Awja near Tikrit, he rose from a difficult childhood to join the Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, which promoted Arab nationalism and socialism. Saddam gained power through party ranks and became vice president in 1968 before assuming full control in 1979.
His rule was marked by authoritarian governance, suppression of political opposition, and widespread human rights abuses. Saddam maintained strict control over Iraq through a powerful security apparatus and a cult of personality. During his presidency, Iraq fought the Iran–Iraq War, a prolonged and devastating conflict. In 1990, he ordered the invasion of Kuwait, leading to the Gulf War and subsequent international sanctions that severely impacted Iraq’s economy.
In 2003, a U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq, toppling Saddam’s regime. He was captured later that year, tried by an Iraqi court, and convicted of crimes against humanity. Saddam Hussein was executed on December 30, 2006. His legacy remains highly controversial, associated with both strong centralized rule and significant suffering among the Iraqi people.
