Billy Wilder (1906–2002) was an Austrian-American filmmaker and one of Hollywood’s most celebrated directors and screenwriters. Born in Sucha Beskidzka, Austria-Hungary (now Poland), Wilder began his career as a journalist before transitioning to screenwriting in Berlin during the 1920s. Fleeing the rise of the Nazis, he emigrated to the United States in 1934.
