Anwar El-Sadat (1918–1981) was an Egyptian military officer, statesman, and the third President of Egypt, serving from 1970 until his assassination in 1981. A key figure in modern Middle Eastern history, Sadat was instrumental in shifting Egypt’s trajectory from socialism to economic liberalization and seeking peace with Israel.

Born in Mit Abu El Kom, Egypt, Sadat joined the Egyptian Military Academy and became a member of the Free Officers Movement that overthrew King Farouk in 1952. Initially a close ally of Gamal Abdel Nasser, Sadat succeeded him as president in 1970. His presidency is marked by the dramatic 1973 Yom Kippur War, which restored Egyptian pride and territory, and the historic 1979 Camp David Accords, where he negotiated peace with Israel, earning a Nobel Peace Prize.

Despite his achievements, Sadat’s peace treaty with Israel angered many in the Arab world, leading to his assassination in 1981 by extremists.
