Amala initially pursued a career in Bharatanatyam, a classical Indian dance form, and her graceful performances led her to the film industry.
She made her film debut in 1986 with the Tamil film Mythili Ennai Kaathali, which was a commercial success. Her portrayal of strong, independent women in films like Shiva (1989), Pushpaka Vimana (1987), and Agni Natchathiram (1988) made her a popular star during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
