Awkwafina: Birthday

American actress and comedian
Born: June 2, 1988

Awkwafina, born Nora Lum on June 2, 1988, in Stony Brook, New York, is an American actress, rapper, and comedian known for her distinctive voice and sharp wit. Raised in Queens by her Chinese-American father and Korean-American grandmother after her mother’s passing, she developed a passion for music early on, studying classical and jazz trumpet at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School.

At 15, she adopted the moniker “Awkwafina,” embracing a bold alter ego to contrast her reserved personality. Her satirical rap “My Vag” went viral in 2012, leading to her debut album Yellow Ranger in 2014. Transitioning to acting, she gained acclaim for roles in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians (2018).

Her performance in The Farewell (2019) earned her a Golden Globe, making her the first Asian-American woman to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. She also stars in and produces the Comedy Central series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. In 2023, she co-produced and starred in Quiz Lady, which won a Primetime Emmy Award. Awkwafina continues to challenge stereotypes and champion Asian-American representation in Hollywood.
