Charles Manson (1934–2017) was a notorious American criminal and cult leader. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he had a troubled upbringing and a criminal record from a young age. In the late 1960s, he formed a cult known as the Manson Family, composed of young, impressionable followers.

Manson gained infamy for orchestrating a series of brutal murders in 1969, including the murder of actress Sharon Tate, in an attempt to incite a race war he called “Helter Skelter.” His charismatic and manipulative personality played a significant role in convincing his followers to commit these heinous crimes.

In 1971, Manson and several of his followers were convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. He spent the rest of his life incarcerated, becoming a symbol of the dark side of counterculture and the dangers of charismatic leadership. Manson died in 2017 while still in prison.

Charles Manson remains a prominent figure in American criminal history, representing the disturbing power that a charismatic and manipulative leader can have over vulnerable individuals.
