Dakota Meyer is a retired United States Marine and the recipient of the Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government. Born on June 26, 1988, in Columbia, Kentucky, Meyer enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2006.

During his second deployment in Afghanistan, on September 8, 2009, he displayed extraordinary heroism in the Battle of Ganjgal. Despite orders to remain at the staging area, Meyer repeatedly entered a kill zone to rescue fellow soldiers and recover the bodies of fallen comrades, saving numerous lives.

For his valor, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on September 15, 2011, by President Barack Obama. After his military service, Meyer became an advocate for veterans, a public speaker, and an author. He co-wrote “Into the Fire: A Firsthand Account of the Most Extraordinary Battle in the Afghan War,” which details his experiences in combat and the significance of his actions.
