Dan Coats is an American politician and diplomat, born on May 16, 1943, in Jackson, Michigan. He served as the Director of National Intelligence from March 2017 to August 2019. Coats represented Indiana in the United States Senate from 1989 to 1999 and again from 2011 to 2017.

A member of the Republican Party, he also served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1989. Coats began his political career as a staffer for then-Indiana Congressman Dan Quayle. He has held various positions in government, including serving as the U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 2001 to 2005.
