Daniel K. Inouye (1924–2012) was a distinguished American politician and U.S. senator from Hawaii, serving from 1963 until his death in 2012.

Born in Honolulu to Japanese immigrant parents, Inouye volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II as part of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese-American unit. He lost his right arm in combat and received the Medal of Honor for his bravery.

After the war, Inouye earned a law degree and began a career in public service. He became Hawaii’s first U.S. representative in 1959 after it gained statehood and was elected to the Senate in 1962. Inouye became the first Japanese American to serve in both the House and Senate.

Over his long tenure, he held significant leadership positions, including President pro tempore of the Senate. He was known for his dedication to civil rights and his advocacy for veterans.
