Edward Heath (1916-2005) was a British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister from 1970 to 1974. Born in Broadstairs, Kent, Heath attended Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied philosophy, politics, and economics. His political career began in 1950 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bexley.

Heath’s tenure as Prime Minister was marked by significant events, including the UK’s entry into the European Economic Community in 1973, a move he strongly championed. Domestically, his government faced economic challenges and industrial strife, notably the miners’ strikes, which led to the three-day week.

After losing the 1974 general election, Heath was succeeded as Conservative leader by Margaret Thatcher in 1975. Despite this, he continued to be an influential figure within the party and British politics. Heath was also an accomplished musician and sailor, winning the Sydney to Hobart yacht race in 1969. He remained an active public speaker and commentator until his death.
