Edward VIII, born Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David on June 23, 1894, was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He became the Prince of Wales in 1911 and ascended the British throne on January 20, 1936, following his father’s death. Edward’s reign, however, was short-lived.

Known for his charm and modern outlook, he created a scandal by pursuing a marriage to Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, which was opposed by the British government and the Church of England.

Faced with the choice between the throne and his love for Wallis, Edward chose the latter, abdicating on December 11, 1936. His younger brother, George VI, succeeded him. Post-abdication, Edward was titled the Duke of Windsor and married Wallis in 1937. The couple lived mostly in France and the United States. Edward died on May 28, 1972, in Paris. His abdication remains a defining moment in British royal history.
