Eric Liddell (1902-1945) was a Scottish athlete and missionary, best known for his achievements in the 1924 Summer Olympics and his commitment to his religious beliefs. Born in China to Scottish parents, Liddell’s devout Christian faith played a central role in his life. He gained international fame when he refused to run in his best event, the 100 meters, in the 1924 Olympics held in Paris, because the heat was scheduled on a Sunday, his day of worship. Instead, he competed in the 400 meters and won the gold medal, setting a new world record.

Liddell’s sports career was remarkable, but his devotion to Christianity led him to leave competitive athletics in 1925 to become a missionary in China. He served as a teacher and preacher, and his selfless dedication during times of turmoil and war earned him deep respect. Tragically, Liddell’s life was cut short when he died in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, where he had been held as a prisoner. His legacy lives on through books, films, and the enduring inspiration he provides as an individual who remained steadfast in his principles, both on the track and in his spiritual journey.
