Erik Prince, born June 6, 1969, is an American entrepreneur, former Navy SEAL, and the founder of the private security firm Blackwater USA, now known as Academi. Born into a wealthy Michigan family, Prince was influenced by his father’s automotive parts company and his sister Betsy DeVos’s involvement in conservative politics.
He served as a Navy SEAL from 1992 to 1996, participating in missions in the Balkans and the Middle East. In 1997, he founded Blackwater, which gained prominence and controversy for its role in providing security services during the Iraq War.
Blackwater’s involvement in the 2007 Nisour Square massacre, where civilians were killed, brought intense scrutiny and criticism. Prince has since sold Blackwater and moved on to other ventures, including Frontier Resource Group, which focuses on investment in natural resources in Africa. Prince remains a contentious figure in discussions about privatized military operations and global security.
