Eugene V. Debs (1855–1926) was a prominent American labor and socialist leader. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, he became a passionate advocate for workers’ rights and social justice. Debs co-founded the American Railway Union (ARU) in 1893, aiming to unite railway workers for better conditions. He led the Pullman Strike of 1894, a pivotal moment in labor history, which eventually led to his imprisonment for violating an injunction against the strike.

Debs later transformed into a staunch socialist and played a pivotal role in the formation of the Socialist Party of America in 1901. He ran as the party’s presidential candidate five times, between 1900 and 1920, advocating for labor rights, public ownership of essential industries, and social equality. His charismatic speeches and dedication garnered significant support.

His anti-war stance during World War I led to his arrest under the Espionage Act in 1918, and he was sentenced to ten years in prison. Debs’ imprisonment only solidified his status as a symbol of resistance against injustice. He received nearly a million votes in the 1920 presidential election, despite being incarcerated.

Debs’ legacy is one of tireless advocacy for the working class, civil liberties, and socialism in the United States. His efforts contributed to the growth of organized labor and the advancement of progressive ideals.
