John Paul Jones (1747-1792) was a prominent American naval officer during the American Revolutionary War. Born in Scotland, Jones began his maritime career at a young age, eventually rising through the ranks to captain his own vessels.

Embracing the American cause for independence, he joined the Continental Navy and quickly distinguished himself with his audacity and tactical brilliance.

Jones is best remembered for his victory aboard the Bonhomme Richard against the British warship HMS Serapis in 1779. Despite being heavily outgunned and his ship severely damaged, Jones refused to surrender, famously declaring, “I have not yet begun to fight!” His tenacity led to a remarkable victory, boosting American morale and establishing his legacy as a naval hero.

After the war, Jones served in the Russian Navy under Catherine the Great before settling in Paris, where he died in 1792. His daring exploits and strategic acumen earned him the title “Father of the American Navy.”
