Katherine Johnson (1918–2020) was an African American mathematician whose pioneering work at NASA was crucial to the success of the United States space program.
Born in West Virginia, Johnson exhibited extraordinary mathematical abilities from a young age, graduating from high school at 14 and college at 18. In 1953, she joined NASA’s predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), where her skills quickly became indispensable.
Johnson’s work in orbital mechanics was vital to the success of numerous space missions, including the 1962 orbital flight of John Glenn, where she manually verified the calculations for his spacecraft’s trajectory. Her contributions were essential during a time when computing technology was in its infancy.
Throughout her career, Johnson broke barriers of race and gender, becoming a symbol of excellence and perseverance. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and her story was popularized in the 2016 film Hidden Figures.
