Kwame M. Kilpatrick, born June 8, 1970, is a former American politician who served as the Mayor of Detroit from 2002 to 2008. A member of the Democratic Party, Kilpatrick was elected at the age of 31, making him the youngest mayor in Detroit’s history.
Prior to his mayoralty, he served as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives, eventually becoming the Minority Floor Leader.
Kilpatrick’s tenure as mayor was marred by controversies, including allegations of corruption and misconduct. In 2008, he resigned from office following a plea agreement in a perjury case related to a text-messaging scandal involving an affair with his chief of staff.
In 2013, he was convicted on 24 federal felony counts, including racketeering, fraud, and extortion, and was sentenced to 28 years in prison. However, in January 2021, his sentence was commuted by President Donald Trump. Kilpatrick has since been involved in public speaking and advocacy work.
