Lou Gehrig (born June 19, 1903 – died June 2, 1941) was an American baseball player widely regarded as one of the greatest first basemen in Major League Baseball history. He spent his entire career with the New York Yankees from 1923 to 1939. Known as the “Iron Horse” for his durability, Gehrig played in 2,130 consecutive games, a record that stood for 56 years.
A powerful hitter, Gehrig had a lifetime batting average of .340 and hit 493 home runs. He was a seven-time All-Star and two-time American League MVP. Gehrig helped lead the Yankees to six World Series titles during his career.
In 1939, Gehrig was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating disease now often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. He retired that same year and gave his famous “Luckiest Man” speech. He passed away at age 37, leaving a lasting legacy in sports and courage.
