Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) was an American writer, journalist, and women’s rights advocate. She was born in Cambridgeport, Massachusetts and was the first-born child of Timothy Fuller, a lawyer, and politician, and his wife, Margaret Crane.
Fuller received an exceptional education for a woman of her time, studying several languages, literature, and philosophy. She became the first female editor of the transcendentalist magazine “The Dial” and also worked as a literary critic for the New York Tribune.
In 1845, Fuller published “Woman in the Nineteenth Century,” a groundbreaking feminist work that argued for women’s equality and liberation from traditional gender roles. She also traveled to Europe as a foreign correspondent for the Tribune and wrote extensively about her experiences.
Tragically, Fuller and her husband and child died in a shipwreck off the coast of New York in 1850. Despite her short life, Fuller’s legacy as a feminist, writer, and intellectual continues to inspire and influence generations of women.
