Marianne Moore (1887-1972) was an American poet, critic, and editor. She was born in Kirkwood, Missouri, and grew up in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Moore studied biology at Bryn Mawr College and worked as a teacher before dedicating herself to writing.
Moore’s poetry is known for its precise language, keen observations of nature and animals, and use of unconventional imagery. Her collections include “Observations” (1924), “Selected Poems” (1935), “What Are Years?” (1941), and “The Complete Poems of Marianne Moore” (1967).
In addition to her writing, Moore worked as an editor at The Dial magazine and served as the poetry editor of The Nation. She also mentored a number of poets, including Elizabeth Bishop and James Merrill.
