Mobutu Sese Seko (1930–1997) was a Congolese military officer and politician who ruled Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) from 1965 to 1997. Born Joseph-Désiré Mobutu in Lisala, he joined the army under Belgian colonial rule and later became a key figure in Congo’s independence movement.
In 1965, he seized power in a coup, establishing a one-party state and adopting the name Mobutu Sese Seko.
