Park Geun-hye (born February 2, 1952) is a South Korean politician who served as the country’s first female president from 2013 to 2017. She is the daughter of former South Korean President Park Chung-hee, who ruled from 1961 until his assassination in 1979.
Before becoming president, Park was a long-time member of the National Assembly and a key figure in the conservative Saenuri Party. Her presidency focused on economic reforms, national security, and strengthening ties with the U.S., but was marred by a major corruption scandal involving her close confidante Choi Soon-sil.
In 2017, she was impeached and removed from office, later sentenced to 25 years in prison for bribery and abuse of power. However, she was pardoned in 2021. Despite her controversial legacy, Park remains a significant figure in South Korean political history as its first female leader and one of its most polarizing presidents.
