Pernell Elven Roberts Jr. (May 18, 1928 – January 24, 2010) was an American actor and singer, best known for his roles as Adam Cartwright on Bonanza (1959–1965) and as Dr. John McIntyre on Trapper John, M.D. (1979–1986).

Born in Waycross, Georgia, Roberts served in the U.S. Marine Corps before studying at Georgia Tech and the University of Maryland. He began his acting career on stage, notably performing in Shakespearean productions. Roberts left Bonanza after six seasons, seeking more challenging roles and expressing dissatisfaction with the show’s content and lack of diversity.

A committed civil rights activist, he participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches and advocated for minority representation in media. Roberts was married four times and had one son, who tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 1989. He passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2010 at the age of 81.
