Pierino Ronald “Perry” Como (May 18, 1912 – May 12, 2001) was an American singer, actor, and television personality whose career spanned over six decades. Born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, to Italian immigrant parents, he was the seventh of 13 children.
Initially a barber, Como’s smooth baritone and relaxed style led him to join the Ted Weems Orchestra in the 1930s, propelling him into the music industry. In 1943, he signed with RCA Victor, remaining with the label for 44 years. Como became a household name with hits like “Catch a Falling Star”—the first single to receive RIAA gold certification—and “Papa Loves Mambo.”
He also starred in “The Perry Como Show,” a pioneering musical variety program that aired from 1955 to 1963. Known for his cardigan sweaters and gentle demeanor, Como earned five Emmys, a Peabody Award, and a Kennedy Center Honor. He passed away peacefully at his home in Florida, just days before his 89th birthday.
