Pete Conrad was an American astronaut, naval officer, and aeronautical engineer born on June 2, 1930. He became the third person to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 12 mission in 1969. Known for his jovial personality and quick wit, Conrad’s famous words upon stepping onto the lunar surface were, “Whoopee! Man, that may have been a small one for Neil, but that’s a long one for me.”
Conrad’s career began in the U.S. Navy, where he became a test pilot and aeronautical engineer. Selected by NASA in 1962, he first flew into space on Gemini 5 in 1965, followed by Gemini 11 in 1966, and Skylab 2 in 1973, where he commanded the first crew to the Skylab space station.
After leaving NASA, Conrad worked in private industry, including a role with McDonnell Douglas. He passed away on July 8, 1999, following a motorcycle accident, leaving a legacy as a pioneering and charismatic astronaut.
