Richard Belzer was born on August 4, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He began his career as a stand-up comedian in the 1970s, performing in New York City clubs and appearing on early episodes of Saturday Night Live.

Belzer gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Detective John Munch, a role he originated on Homicide: Life on the Street and continued on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
