Richard Griffiths, born on July 31, 1947, in Thornaby-on-Tees, England, was a celebrated British actor known for his work on stage, television, and film. He overcame childhood health issues and learned sign language to communicate with his deaf parents. Griffiths trained at the Manchester Polytechnic School of Drama and began his career in theatre, eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company.
He gained widespread recognition for his role as Uncle Monty in Withnail and I (1987) and as Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter film series. On stage, he earned critical acclaim and won both a Tony Award and an Olivier Award for his performance as Hector in The History Boys.
His television roles included the lead in Pie in the Sky. Known for his wit, warmth, and commanding presence, Griffiths was appointed OBE in 2008. He died on March 28, 2013, following complications from heart surgery, aged 65.
