Robert Ballard is an American oceanographer and marine geologist best known for his discovery of the wreck of the RMS Titanic in 1985. Born on June 30, 1942, in Wichita, Kansas, Ballard developed an early interest in underwater exploration.
He earned degrees in chemistry and geology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and later a Ph.D. in marine geology and geophysics from the University of Rhode Island. Ballard’s pioneering work in deep-sea submersible technology has led to significant discoveries, including the sunken ships of the German fleet in the Black Sea, the hydrothermal vents on the Galápagos Rift, and the wreck of the battleship Bismarck.
He has also contributed to the development of remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for underwater exploration. Throughout his career, Ballard has authored numerous books and scientific papers and continues to inspire future generations of ocean explorers through his work with the Ocean Exploration Trust.
