Robert Mueller is an American attorney and former government official best known for his role as Special Counsel for the United States Department of Justice from 2017 to 2019.
Born on August 7, 1944, in New York City, Mueller graduated from Princeton University and later earned a law degree from the University of Virginia. He served as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War, earning a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.
Mueller began his legal career in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, eventually rising to become the FBI Director from 2001 to 2013. His tenure as FBI Director was marked by significant changes in the agency, particularly in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In 2017, Mueller was appointed Special Counsel to oversee the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 U.S.
presidential election. His investigation led to several indictments and brought intense public and political scrutiny. Mueller retired from public service in 2019.
