Shelley Long (born August 23, 1949) is an American actress and comedian best known for her iconic role as Diane Chambers on the classic sitcom Cheers. Raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Long studied drama at Northwestern University before beginning her career in commercials, local television, and comedy troupes. Her big break came in 1982 when she joined the cast of Cheers, where her witty, refined character quickly became a fan favorite.
Long’s performance earned her five Emmy nominations and one win, as well as two Golden Globe Awards.
