Tommy Chong, born May 24, 1938, in Edmonton, Alberta, is a Canadian-American comedian, actor, musician, and cannabis rights activist. He gained fame as one half of the iconic comedy duo Cheech & Chong, whose marijuana-themed albums and films like Up in Smoke (1978) became cult classics and helped define the stoner comedy genre.

Before comedy, Chong played guitar in R&B bands, including Bobby Taylor & the Vancouvers, who had a Motown hit with “Does Your Mama Know About Me” in 1968. In the 2000s, Chong portrayed the lovable hippie Leo on That ’70s Show. In 2003, he served nine months in federal prison after being targeted in Operation Pipe Dreams for selling glass pipes online.

A vocal advocate for cannabis legalization, he co-founded the cannabis brand Chong’s Choice and serves on the NORML advisory board. Chong is a cancer survivor and credits cannabis in his recovery. In 2025, he reunited with Cheech Marin for Cheech & Chong’s Last Movie, a documentary reflecting on their legacy.
