Educated at McGill University and the University of British Columbia, he worked as a teacher before going into politics. He was elected to the Canadian Parliament as a Liberal Party candidate in the 2008 federal election, representing the Papineau riding (located in Montreal), and was re-elected in 2011. In 2013, he was elected the leader of the Liberal Party.
