Maria Mitchell (1818-1889) was an American astronomer and educator, born on August 1, 1818, on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. She was the third of ten children born to Quaker parents, William and Lydia Mitchell.
Mitchell was interested in astronomy from an early age, and her father encouraged her by providing her with a telescope and teaching her about the stars. In 1847, she discovered a new comet, which became known as “Miss Mitchell’s Comet.” This discovery made her famous, and she was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1848.
Mitchell continued to teach and work as an astronomer, becoming the first woman appointed to the faculty of Vassar College in 1865, where she established the first observatory in the United States dedicated to research and teaching. She also served as the president of the Association for the Advancement of Women.
Mitchell was a trailblazer for women in science and education, and she used her position to advocate for the inclusion of women in these fields. She died on June 28, 1889, in Lynn, Massachusetts, at the age of 70.
