Pernell Roberts (1928-2010) was an American actor and singer best known for his roles in television and theater. Born in Waycross, Georgia, Roberts developed an early interest in acting and singing, performing in church and school productions. He attended Georgia Tech and the University of Maryland but did not graduate, opting instead to pursue a career in acting.
Roberts’ breakthrough role came in 1959 when he was cast as Adam Cartwright, the eldest son on the popular Western television series “Bonanza.” He played the role for six seasons before leaving the show in 1965, reportedly due to dissatisfaction with the character’s development and the show’s direction.
After “Bonanza,” Roberts continued to work in television, theater, and film. He was known for his guest appearances on numerous TV shows and for his role as the titular character in the medical drama “Trapper John, M.D.” (1979-1986), a spin-off of the popular series “MAS*H.” His performance in this series earned him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.
Roberts was also an accomplished stage actor, performing in Broadway productions such as “The Visit” and “Camelot.” Throughout his career, he was noted for his deep, resonant voice and commanding stage presence. Pernell Roberts passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2010 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of versatile and memorable performances.
