Roddy McDowall (1928–1998) was a British-American actor and photographer, renowned for his versatility and long career in film, television, and stage. Born in London, McDowall showed an early passion for acting, making his screen debut in the British film Murder in the Family (1938) at age 10. His family moved to the United States during World War II, where he found success as a child actor in Hollywood, particularly with How Green Was My Valley (1941).
As McDowall matured, he transitioned to adult roles, avoiding the struggles many child stars faced. One of his most iconic performances came in Planet of the Apes (1968) as Cornelius, a role he reprised in several sequels. McDowall also gained acclaim in The Poseidon Adventure (1972) and Fright Night (1985).
