Sid Vicious, born John Simon Ritchie on May 10, 1957, was an English musician and bassist best known for his time as a member of the punk rock band the Sex Pistols. Vicious joined the band in 1977 after original bassist Glen Matlock left the group. He played on the band’s only studio album, “Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols.”
Vicious was known for his confrontational behavior both on and off stage, and his image as a punk icon was cemented when he was arrested and charged with murder in 1978, following the death of his girlfriend Nancy Spungen. He was released on bail but died of a heroin overdose on February 2, 1979, at the age of 21.
Despite his short and tumultuous career, Sid Vicious remains a cultural icon and a symbol of punk rock rebellion.
