Sondra Locke (May 28, 1944 – November 3, 2018) was an American actress, director, and producer, known for her significant contributions to film and her tumultuous relationship with Clint Eastwood. Born in Shelbyville, Tennessee, Locke’s acting career took off with her debut in “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” (1968), for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
In the mid-1970s, Locke’s career became closely linked with Clint Eastwood, with whom she co-starred in six films, including “The Outlaw Josey Wales” (1976), “Every Which Way But Loose” (1978), and “Sudden Impact” (1983). Their off-screen relationship, however, was marked by controversy and legal battles, including a high-profile palimony suit and a subsequent fraud lawsuit against Warner Bros., which Locke alleged had been arranged by Eastwood to sabotage her directing career.
Locke’s directorial efforts include “Ratboy” (1986) and “Impulse” (1990), showcasing her talent behind the camera. Despite her professional and personal struggles, Locke remained a resilient figure in Hollywood, known for her determination and artistry. She authored an autobiography, “The Good, the Bad, and the Very Ugly: A Hollywood Journey,” in 1997, detailing her experiences in the film industry.
