Lena Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) was an American singer, actress, dancer, and civil rights activist whose talent and determination broke racial barriers in the entertainment industry. Born in New York City, she began performing as a teenager at the famous Cotton Club before signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the 1940s.
