Marian Anderson

Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was an American contralto singer and one of the most celebrated classical vocalists of the 20th century. Born in Philadelphia, Anderson showed an early talent for singing and began performing in church choirs as a child.

Despite facing racial discrimination and limited opportunities for black classical singers, Anderson continued to hone her craft and gained recognition for her powerful voice and expressive performances. She made her professional debut in 1924 and went on to tour extensively in the United States and Europe.

One of Anderson’s most famous performances took place in 1939, when she sang at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. after being denied the opportunity to perform at a nearby concert hall due to racial segregation. The concert attracted a crowd of over 75,000 people and was broadcast nationally on the radio.

Throughout her career, Anderson broke down racial barriers in the classical music world and paved the way for future generations of black musicians. She received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1963, and continued to perform until her retirement in the 1960s.
